Matt Corey Bio
Matt Corey is a graduate of the Youngstown State University where he studied Jazz Performance and Music Education. Matt was one one of two freshman in has class to earn a spot in the prestigious Jazz Ensemble I, under the direction of Tony Leonardi. The other freshman member that year was trumpeter Sean Jones. During his time in Youngstown Matt had the good fortune of being able to perform with jazz legends Phil Woods, Nick Brignola, Conrad Herwig, John Fedchock, Michael Abene, and Jimmy Owens.
Upon completion of his studies at YSU, Matt became the star of the sequel to the Tony Award Winning Broadway spectacular Blast! The show was packaged as Blast 2: Shockwave for a 3 months residency at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center and a subsequent 9 month United States national Theatre tour. The show added Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky as a duet between Matt and saxophonist Jessy J and was renamed Cyberjam for a critically acclaimed residency at London's Queen's Theatre. London Theatre Guide noted Matt's performance as "exquisite"
A rock & roll road tour was the next step in Matt's journey as he joined the band known as Skinny. The pop-jam band won the honor of being the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's inaugural #1 unsigned band beating out over 1000 bands across the United States. The band released 5 albums while extensively touring as headliners and in support of acts such as Dave Matthews Band, Lil Wayne & the Cash Money Millionaires, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, the Spin Doctors, Blessid Union of Souls and many others
At this point Matt was finally ready to lead his own show. Â Creating a set featuring popular covers with the saxophone replacing the vocals. Â Quickly gaining a huge audience in the college music market Matt went on to perform at hundreds of college and military bases winning the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities' (APCA) "Male Solo Artist of the Year" five years in a row. Â Featured on the cover of Campus Activities magazine and nominated for Entertainer of the Year and many other honors. Â Touring mainly as a headliner, Matt's college tour also falso included support roles for several other artists including Common, B.O.B., Mike Posner, Far East Movement, O.A.R., NewÂ Boyz, Eli White Band, Pleasure P, and even a strange encounter with Sledgehammer wielding, fruit smashing 80's comic phenom Gallagher.
Matt was able the cap off that tour with a sold out Concert in his hometown featuring the entire Canton Symphony Orchestra and friend Elec Simon from the Broadway Musical Stomp
Taking a break from the responsibilities of being a leader after7 years years and hundreds of shows, Matt'sÂ next move was back to the role of sideman where he joined up with friends Hey Monea! Â While not featured on any of the groups albums, he was featured on several live dates with the group including many Music Festival cruises produced by Atlanta based concert promoters Sixthman. Â Matt was featured with the Monea's on Kid Rock's "Chillin the Most Cruise", The 311 Caribbean Cruise, and The Rock Boat.
2019 sees Matt returning to the role of frontman and leader. Â Matt has joined up with longtime friend and producer Jody Daniels of the Reelphat Media Group. Â The pair have been steadily working in the studio producing new Saxophone covers such as their current release the Old Town Road (Saxophone Remix) and have an all original album slated for release summer of 2019 which has already earned major label interest. Â The Matt Corey Band which features Ohio Player's guitarist Rick Ward, keyboardist Robert Johnson, and Jody Daniels on bass is also back with a brand new high energy party set of current and classic covers featuring vocalists Karri Fedor, Rich Goudeau, Blaq Rose, and Ashley Kermec on select dates.
